50-Star Template for a Wood Flag: Printable PDF + Cut File

If you're building a wood American flag, sooner or later you go looking for the same thing: a 50-star template you can print, trace, or cut into a stencil — so you don't have to plot fifty stars by hand and hope they come out straight.

Here's the honest rundown of your options, what actually works, and how to get a template drawn to your flag's size instead of forcing your flag to match someone else's.

Why "just download a free one" usually backfires

There are free 50-star printables floating around, and they're fine — if your flag is the exact size the template was drawn for. The catch: the star field has to match your flag's blue field precisely. Print a template made for a 24-inch flag and try to use it on a 36-inch flag, and every star is the wrong size and every gap is off. Scale it up on a copier and you introduce drift and blur.

A 50-star field isn't a free-floating graphic — it's locked to three measurements of your specific flag:

• The blue field width (about 40% of the flag's overall width)
• The blue field height (the top 7 of the 13 stripes)
• The star diameter (0.0616 of the flag's height, point to point)

Get those right and the field looks unmistakably like the American flag. Get them wrong and the eye catches it instantly — too crowded, or a lonely canton swimming in blue.

The template built to your exact size

Rather than hunt for a printable that happens to fit, I built a tool that draws the whole star field to your flag. You type in your flag's size, it lays out all 50 stars to official flag proportions for that size, and you get two files:

• A print-ready PDF — take it to any print shop (or a big-box copy counter) and print it at full scale. Trace it, glue it down, or paint straight through it.
• A clean SVG cut file — feed it to a Cricut, Silhouette, or laser and cut a reusable stencil you'll use on every flag you ever build.

And you can see your star field before you pay a dime — enter your size, look at the layout, and only buy if it's right.

Building a standard-size flag?

If you're building the two most common sizes — a 3-foot flag or a 17-inch flag — those layouts are already drawn. Grab the $12 SVG cut-file pack and cut a reusable stencil without entering anything. It's the cheapest way in if your flag matches one of those two sizes.

What to do with the template once you have it

1. Print or cut it. Print the PDF at 100% (no "fit to page"), or run the SVG through your cutting machine onto mylar or stencil vinyl.
2. Test-fit it dry. Lay the template on your stained blue field before any paint touches wood. It should line up square with room to spare — if it doesn't, stop and re-check your size.
3. Paint light. Two light coats through a stencil beat one heavy coat that bleeds under the edges every time.
4. Lift while wet and let it dry. Wipe the stencil clean and it's ready for the next flag.
